Mary Johnson

Hey, I’m Mary. I’m a trail-runner, mountain-lover and cake-baker.

I discovered a love for running later in life and quite by accident. But my love for the great outdoors was instilled from birth. With a free-spirited father, I spent my youth exploring the 20 acres of woodland behind our home in southern Indiana, and on the trails of the Appalachian Mountains. When I wasn’t baking cakes with my mum, I was outside (probably barefoot) finding trails, leaves and critters.

I continued to feed my love for the trails when I moved to the UK in 1995 and soon found the fells of the Lake District. So when I took up running in 2012 – it felt like a natural progression to become a trail runner.

In my short career as a runner I have completed six marathons, two ultras and an 18km sky race in the Alps near Chamonix.

I’m a very proud “back of the pack” runner and am passionate about inclusivity in the sport. I’m LiRF qualified through England Athletics, have led the beginners group at my local running club and am a proud core team member of Roding Valley parkrun. Running isn’t simply a hobby for me, it’s much more than that.
