Courtney Kipps

I have been involved in endurance sports medicine for nearly twenty years as the Assistant Medical Director of the London Marathon and RideLondon, and through previous roles as the Medical Director of the London and Blenheim Triathlons. My research has focused on understanding the medical complications and injuries that affect runners in marathon training and I try to share such research and learning through my role as co-Chair of Marathon Medicine, the largest and longest-running conference on the medicine and science of endurance sports worldwide. I was a founder member of the International Institute of Race Medicine (now known as the World Academy of Endurance Medicine under the umbrella of World Athletics). I am a co-author of British Athletics’ guidelines for medical services at road races as well as a recent UK-wide consensus statement on evidence-based management of exertional heat illness.

In my day job, I am a sport and exercise medicine physician at the Institute of Sport, Exercise & Health at UCL where I am also a co-Director of the Masters programme in Sports Medicine, Exercise & Health. I am an elected Council member of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine, UK, and vice-president elect of the new College of Sport, Exercise, and Musculoskeletal Medicine.
