Katie Holmes is a sports historian and writer, focusing on the history of women's endurance running. She is passionate about recovering stories which have faded out of public memory due to the marginalisation of women in sport.
Katie took up running in 2011 for a charity event and in 2014, aged 50, created the RunYoung50 blog as a place to share the stories and achievements of female runners over 50. She has written about female long-distance and ultra-distance pioneers for magazines and websites. Her widely praised book, Rulebreakers and Ghost Runners: the British women who asserted their right to run was published by Bloomsbury Sport in August 2026. Until April 1975 British women were not permitted to race further than 4 miles. Rulebreakers and Ghost Runners brings into the spotlight the untold stories of the incredible women who broke the rules by ‘crashing’ men’s races, challenging discrimination and showing that they were perfectly capable of running marathons – and further.
Katie has received awards for her research from the Women’s History Network and the British Society of Sports History.
